In the early hours of June 3 Beijing time, longevity biotech startup NewLimit announced a $435 million Series C funding round led by Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund. Existing backers including Abstract Ventures, Kleiner Perkins, NFDG, Eli Lilly Ventures, and Valor Equity Partners joined the round, while new investors such as Thrive Capital, Greenoaks, and Quiet Capital also participated. According to a Wall Street Journal report, the round values NewLimit at $3.1 billion, more than tripling its valuation from a year ago.

NewLimit revealed in the funding announcement that following breakthrough research results, the company is advancing longevity medicine into human clinical trials. Its first drug candidate, targeting alcohol-related liver disease, is expected to enter clinical trials next year. “By reprogramming cell age, humans can gain longer healthy lifespans,” the company stated. “We are now closer than ever to the goal of delaying, or even reversing, aging.”

From Crypto to Biotech: Armstrong’s Unexpected Bet
The co-founder of NewLimit is a familiar name in the crypto world—Brian Armstrong, founder and CEO of Coinbase. In 2021, Armstrong teamed up with former GV partner and bioengineer Blake Byers and stem cell biologist Jacob Kimmel to provide $110 million in initial funding and launch NewLimit in South San Francisco. Before this Series C, NewLimit had completed three funding rounds but kept a relatively low profile, rarely disclosing details of its research pipeline.

According to its official description, NewLimit is dedicated to developing drugs that extend people’s healthspans. “As we age, our cells’ functions decline, making us more susceptible to disease. Aging was once considered inevitable, but emerging science shows that aging can be reversed at the cellular level. We are building on these discoveries to develop the first drugs that restore youthful function to aging cells.” In simpler terms, NewLimit is using science to tackle longevity—once the domain of mythological quests.

The Science: Yamanaka Factors and the Search for the Right Combination
While scientists have long understood the link between aging and cellular decline, pinpointing a way to reverse it remained elusive until 2006. That year, Japanese scientist Shinya Yamanaka discovered that activating just a few specific transcription factors could reprogram adult cells into a youthful, embryonic stem cell-like state. The findings, later named “Yamanaka Factors,” earned Yamanaka the 2012 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. His work demonstrated for the first time that cellular age is not irreversible—a principle at the heart of NewLimit’s approach.

“Our drugs work by activating specific transcription factor genes to reprogram a cell’s epigenome to a younger state,” NewLimit explains on its website. “We already know that this reversal is possible. But which precise combination of transcription factors is needed to restore youthful function to different types of cells remains unknown. Discovering these effective gene combinations—what we call payloads—is the core challenge of our work.” The company’s strategy is to first tackle a specific disease, secure drug approval, and then expand into broader applications. Its alcohol-related liver disease candidate exemplifies this approach. Co-founder and CEO Jacob Kimmel describes liver disease as a “sped-up version of aging,” one that simply manifests the same aging processes everyone undergoes, only faster and more severely.

Tech Billionaires Rush Toward Immortality
NewLimit is far from the only company chasing longevity science. In 2022, Sam Altman invested $180 million in Retro Biosciences, which is also developing drugs to rejuvenate aging cells and recently disclosed a $1.8 billion valuation. Similarly, Altos Labs, reportedly backed by Jeff Bezos, launched in 2022 with $3 billion in funding and has since raised nearly twice that amount. From Thiel to Altman to Bezos, the most aggressive investors in this sector are the ultra-wealthy who sit atop the technology and financial pyramid. Thiel has publicly expressed a deep disdain for death, once declaring, “Death is the greatest enemy of humanity, but we treat it like a law of nature.”

The logic behind these nine-figure bets is straightforward: when wealth and power reach their peak, time becomes the only enemy—and the only luxury that money cannot directly buy. By pouring billions into reprogramming cell age, these titans are placing their wager on science to beat the clock.
