Cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase Global has launched an AI-powered app store that has already processed over 165 million transactions with a total payment volume of $50 million. The platform is built on the company's proprietary x402 payment protocol, providing permissionless stablecoin rails across seven service categories: reasoning, data, media, search, social, infrastructure, and trading.
Microtransaction Optimization: AI Agents Execute Autonomously
The app store integrates 69,000 AI agents with an average transaction value of just $0.31, optimized for micro-payments. These agents autonomously retrieve financial data from CoinGecko, process it via OpenAI's inference endpoint, execute trades through Bankr, and log transactions using QuickNode infrastructure — all without manual authorization.
Technical Architecture and Future Expansion
Coinbase stated that the current phase focuses on validating micro-payment feasibility, with plans to expand the app store's capabilities to handle larger transactions and more complex applications. This move marks a significant step toward practical on-chain payments by AI agents, potentially reshaping the boundaries of digital payments and automated finance.
Market Performance and Industry Impact
Shares of Coinbase parent company COIN saw volatility following the announcement. Over the past year, COIN has risen 18% and currently trades at $206.68. The launch is widely viewed as a pivotal shift for Coinbase from a pure trading platform to a blockchain infrastructure service provider, further strengthening the role of stablecoins as settlement mediums in the AI era.
