Odaily reported that Coinbase Developer Platform has released an update on the development of its payment ecosystem. With Coinbase for Agents now officially live, users can create separate accounts for AI agents and allow them to carry out automated operations such as trading and asset management under predefined permissions and risk-control rules. The update places account access, payments, developer tools and agent capabilities within the same development track.

Coinbase for Agents Adds Separate Account Capabilities

According to the update, the key change in Coinbase for Agents is that users can configure independent accounts for AI agents rather than treating them only as external tools. These accounts can be governed by permissions and risk controls set by the user. Within those defined limits, an agent can perform automated actions including transactions and asset management, while remaining subject to the user’s rules.

Coinbase also showed a new Coinbase CLI and an MCP-based simplified login flow. The demonstration can use Claude to integrate identity and operations, showing how developers may connect identity verification, account access and agent workflows. On the developer wallet side, Coinbase said the wallet is now available through the Swift SDK, enabling integration of self-custodial wallet functions into native iOS applications.

x402 Will Support Direct USDC Balance Payments

Payments were another central part of the update. Coinbase said that in the coming weeks, the x402 protocol will support direct payments from USDC balances for users inside Coinbase for Agents. Under that setup, an agent would not only be able to operate an account within the authorized scope, but also complete real payments directly using stablecoins held by the user. The disclosed update focuses specifically on USDC balance payments and the extension from account operations to payment execution.

Coinbase further stated that it will release a system update on June 16 to further improve payment and agent-related capabilities. Based on the information disclosed in this update, the covered areas include Coinbase for Agents, Coinbase CLI, MCP login integration, the Claude-based demonstration, the Swift SDK developer wallet, and x402 support for direct payments using USDC balances.
