CoinShares' analysis of Q1 2026 13F filings, as reported by Cointelegraph, shows professional investors reduced Bitcoin ETF holdings by 52,000 BTC or 17%. Hedge funds and broker-dealers dominated the sell-off, while investment advisors barely trimmed and banks more than doubled their positions. An analyst linked the moves to historical patterns of leveraged position cleanup during downturns.

An analysis of first-quarter 2026 13F filings by CoinShares, as reported by Cointelegraph, reveals a significant retreat in professional investors' Bitcoin ETF exposure. The 13F filings, required by the SEC for institutions managing over $100 million, provide a quarterly snapshot of holdings. Total BTC under management fell from 313,000 to 261,000, a drop of 52,000 BTC or 17%. The market value of these positions sank 35% to $17.8 billion, and the 13F filers' share of all U.S. Bitcoin ETF assets contracted from 24.7% to 20.8%, underscoring a waning institutional footprint in the ETF landscape.

Selling Concentrated: Hedge Funds and Brokers Account for 96% of Reduction

The sell-off was heavily concentrated. Hedge funds and broker-dealers together accounted for roughly 96% of the total reduction. Hedge funds shed 31,400 BTC, a 39% decline, while broker-dealers slashed 18,800 BTC, a 53% cut that nearly halved their positions.

CoinShares digital asset analyst Matt Kimmell commented that “this data set is consistent with Bitcoin’s historical performance in down markets, with leveraged and tactical positions being cleaned out.” This highlights how leveraged capital tends to exit first during price stress, exacerbating concentrated declines.

Investment Advisors Hold Steady, Banks Double Down

In stark contrast, investment advisors — the largest category of professional investors with 150,300 BTC — trimmed their holdings by only 5.9%, displaying relative resilience. Banks took an even bolder stance, more than doubling their Bitcoin ETF positions by adding 7,800 BTC during the quarter. This counter-cyclical move made banks one of the few institutional cohorts to increase exposure amid the broader pullback, illustrating a clear strategic divergence among professional investors.

Overall, the Q1 data suggests a structural realignment: leveraged and tactical players rapidly exited, while allocation-oriented funds and certain banks used the downturn to build positions. Kimmell's analysis reinforces that such behavior matches past market downturns, providing a valuable lens for gauging institutional sentiment toward Bitcoin in a challenging environment.
