Solana Alpenglow mainnet beta to activate
Anza said the Solana Alpenglow mainnet beta will activate at 14:50 UTC on Oct. 21, 2026. After the upgrade, transaction finality is expected to fall from about 12.8 seconds to 150 milliseconds.
Alpenglow will replace the current TowerBFT voting mechanism with Votor. Validators will no longer need to write every vote on-chain. Instead, they will confirm consensus through direct communication and smaller aggregated records. The network is expected to keep the current system for about 18 minutes before switching to Votor once staked SOL reaches 82% of the validator set.
Another Alpenglow component, Rotor, will change how new blocks are distributed among validators, though no activation date has been announced. This upgrade only includes Votor, and Solana will focus for now on replacing the consensus mechanism. The report was cited from Bitcoin.com News.
Aerodrome and Velodrome merger to begin with token conversion plan
Aero published the token conversion terms and timeline for the Aerodrome-Velodrome merger. The merger will begin at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time on Oct. 21, when token emissions on both legacy platforms will stop.
Existing AERO can be exchanged 1:1 for new AERO. Each VELO will be exchangeable for about 0.044 AERO, and that ratio applies to both circulating and locked tokens. Aero said the VELO conversion ratio depends on supply at launch. Aerodrome holders will receive 94.5% of the new supply, while Velodrome holders will receive 5.5%.
Existing veAERO and veVELO positions will convert into new sAERO positions. Remaining lock periods will carry over and be rounded up to full weeks, while permanent locks will become maximum-term stakes. Tokens will not be swapped automatically. Users holding self-custodied assets will need to use the Aerodrome or Velodrome upgrade portal and first claim rewards and rebase distributions and clear active votes.
The new model will replace the weekly voting cycle with real-time allocation. sAERO holders will be able to direct rewards straight to liquidity pools and accrue returns tied to exchange revenue. A 47-hour cooldown period will apply during the initial allocation adjustment phase. The merger was announced in November 2025, and developer Dromos Labs had originally planned to complete it in the second quarter of 2026.
