ChangXin Memory Technologies, or CXMT, is preparing to enter the NAND flash chip market, according to Reuters, which cited people familiar with the matter. The move would expand the Chinese memory maker beyond its core DRAM business and place it in competition with Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, Micron, and Yangtze Memory Technologies. The report said CXMT plans to build a NAND flash research and production line at a new factory in Beijing and set up a research institute in the city that includes NAND development projects. People familiar with the plan told Reuters that the company has already discussed the effort with customers, including a startup looking to buy chips for AI systems and supercomputers. The timeline for when the R&D line may begin operating, or when large-scale commercial manufacturing could start, was not clear. Reuters also said a global memory shortage driven by demand for AI servers is expected to last at least until 2027. Chipmakers have been prioritizing spending on DRAM and HBM, limiting additions to NAND capacity. The report noted that CXMT raised RMB 57.92 billion in a July IPO, while YMTC was added to the U.S. Entity List in 2022.
