Market Performance and Causes of the Decline
On June 27, Binance founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ) publicly stated that the sharp downturn in the crypto market during the first half of 2026 was not attributable to a single factor but rather a confluence of multiple pressures. Bitcoin has dropped approximately 50% from its all-time high of over $126,000 last October. Beginning the year near $89,000, the asset briefly rose to just above $96,000 before falling to around $60,000.
CZ identified the specific causes as escalating geopolitical tensions, investors rotating capital into the AI sector, and the typical four-year cycle characteristic of crypto markets. These overlapping factors have kept the market under sustained pressure, making a rapid reversal unlikely in the near term.
Long-Term Outlook Unchanged; AI Capital Drain Could Be Positive
Despite short-term price headwinds, CZ expressed confidence in the long-term development of the crypto industry. He believes that demand for fintech services will continue to grow, transaction volumes will increase, and the industry's fundamentals remain intact despite the price decline. Therefore, he is not concerned about the industry itself or short-term price volatility.
Regarding the flow of “hot money” from crypto to AI, CZ took a positive view. He argued that the rise of new technologies will ultimately bring more users and capital to the crypto space, and this capital diversion may actually serve as a catalyst for industry growth.
Prediction Markets and Regulatory Outlook
CZ spoke highly of prediction markets as tools for price discovery and liquidity provision, noting that their rapid growth is beneficial to the public. On the regulatory front, he focused on the US Digital Asset Market Clarity Act (Clarity Act), describing such standalone bills as tactical measures that will not determine the industry's long-term trajectory. He expressed hope for the bill's passage while warning that if US legislation is delayed, other countries may move first to establish rules.
Additionally, CZ highlighted potential political implications: if the Democratic Party regains control of at least one chamber of Congress after the midterm elections, it could review the Trump administration's support for crypto and its pardons of crypto executives. CZ emphasized that he has “nothing to hide” and is willing to cooperate with any inquiries. He tries to stay away from US politics but believes that any anti-crypto figure could now lose a significant number of votes.
