Multiple Drivers of the Market Decline
Binance founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ) said on June 27 that the sharp decline in the crypto market in the first half of 2026 had no single cause. He pointed to geopolitical tensions, investors shifting funds to artificial intelligence (AI), and the typical four-year cycle of the crypto market as factors that together led to persistent declines in Bitcoin and other crypto assets. Bitcoin hit an all-time high of over $126,000 in October last year and has since fallen about 50%. At the start of this year, Bitcoin opened near $89,000, briefly rose to just above $96,000, then dropped to around $60,000.
Long-Term View and Impact of Emerging Sectors
Looking at the long term, CZ remains optimistic about the crypto industry itself. He believes that demand for fintech will continue to grow and transaction volumes will keep increasing, so he is not concerned about the industry fundamentals or short-term price fluctuations. Regarding the flow of “hot money” from crypto to emerging sectors like AI, CZ said this could be a positive factor in the long run, helping the crypto industry focus on truly valuable applications. He also specifically mentioned that prediction markets, as tools for price discovery and liquidity, are growing rapidly, which is good for the public.
Regulatory and Political Uncertainties
On regulation, CZ described the U.S. Digital Asset Market Clarity Act (Clarity Act) and similar stand-alone bills as important but tactical matters that will not determine the long-term growth of the crypto industry. He hopes the Clarity Act will pass, but if U.S. legislation is delayed, other countries may move forward with rulemaking first. CZ also noted that if the Democratic Party regains control of at least one chamber of Congress after the midterm elections, Trump’s support for the crypto industry and his pardons of crypto executives could come under review. CZ said he has “nothing to hide” and is willing to cooperate if relevant parties seek information. On political influence, he tries to stay away from U.S. politics but believes that any anti-crypto figure could now lose a significant number of votes.
