DATA Network, previously known as Story, plans to retire its standalone blockchain and migrate its AI training data protocol to Sui, with the move backed by a $30 million investment from Sui Foundation. As part of the transition, Trace, the project’s onchain registry launched in June, will join the Sui ecosystem. Walrus, a decentralized storage platform already within that ecosystem, is set to become the default storage layer for applications run by DATA Foundation and its partners. The project said its current network will remain operational until the upgrade is completed, and that a detailed migration timeline along with a holder transition plan will be released before the upgrade. The move follows the project’s June shift away from its earlier Story Protocol identity, which had focused on intellectual property licensing, toward building what it described as a full stack for AI training data.

DATA Network plans to retire its independent blockchain and move its AI training data protocol to Sui, in a transition backed by a $30 million investment from Sui Foundation.

The project, previously known as Story, said its Trace registry will join the Sui ecosystem. Trace launched in June as an onchain registry for AI training data provenance and licensing.

Walrus, a decentralized storage platform in the Sui ecosystem, will become the default storage layer for applications operated by DATA Foundation, according to the partners on Monday.

Why the project is moving

The partners said the decision was tied to Sui’s ability to handle millions of daily data registrations and Walrus’s capacity to store large training datasets.

DATA Network said its existing network will continue to operate until the upgrade is complete. A detailed timeline for the upgrade and a transition plan for holders will be published before that process begins.

Shift from Story Protocol to DATA Foundation

Story Protocol was originally a blockchain built around intellectual property licensing. In June, the project pivoted to what it described as a full stack for AI training data and rebranded as DATA Foundation.

It also launched Trace, an onchain registry focused on the provenance and licensing of AI training data.
