What Is a 51% Attack?
A 51% attack occurs when a single miner or entity controls more than half of the total hashrate (computing power) on a proof-of-work blockchain like Bitcoin. Once this threshold is reached, the attacker can temporarily disrupt the network's normal operations. Specifically, the attacker can prevent other miners from confirming new transactions, and can even reverse transactions that they themselves initiated, leading to a "double-spend" problem (where the same Bitcoin is spent more than once). For example, an attacker could first purchase goods with Bitcoin, then use the controlled hashrate to reverse that transaction, effectively keeping the Bitcoin. However, it's important to note that a 51% attack cannot directly steal Bitcoin from other users' wallets or create new coins out of thin air. While the idea of such an attack sounds alarming, in practice the cost of executing it is astronomically high and the potential profit is highly uncertain, making it an irrational strategy for profit-seeking miners.
How Likely Is a 51% Attack?
In general, the larger and more decentralized a blockchain network is, the more secure it becomes. Bitcoin uses a Proof-of-Work (PoW) mechanism: the more hashrate a miner contributes, the higher the chance they will find a new block and earn the reward. Currently, a miner receives 6.25 newly minted Bitcoin (worth approximately $237,000 at current prices) plus all transaction fees from that block as a reward. This incentive structure ensures that the most rational behavior for miners is to maintain the health of the network rather than attack it—attacking would be akin to "burning down one's own house." Moreover, Bitcoin's mining facilities are spread across the globe, making it nearly impossible for any single entity to accumulate more than 50% of the total hashrate. Even if a brief attack were to occur, other honest nodes and miners would quickly coordinate, for example by forking the chain, to restore network order. As a result, Bitcoin is widely regarded as one of the most secure cryptocurrency networks in existence.

A few years ago, people might have seriously debated whether Bitcoin could suddenly go to zero. Today, such a conversation has lost its relevance.
