Democrats were projected to win back control of the U.S. House of Representatives after the Nov. 3 midterm elections, setting up a new line of scrutiny over the Trump family’s cryptocurrency business.
NBC News projected at 10:08 p.m. Eastern Time on Nov. 3, or 11:08 a.m. Taiwan time on Nov. 4, that Democrats would take the House next year, ending unified Republican control of the White House and both chambers of Congress. Decision Desk HQ had made the same projection earlier, at about 10:15 a.m. Taiwan time. Bloomberg described the result as the first real check on Trump in Washington since his return to the White House two years ago. CNN followed with its own projection at 11:06 a.m. Taiwan time.
As of 11:30 a.m. Taiwan time on Nov. 4, the Associated Press had not called control of the House, and control of the Senate was still unresolved.
NBC projected about 244 House seats for Democrats
Based on vote analysis, NBC projected Democrats would win about 244 seats, though the final number could still move by a few seats. The House has 435 seats, and 218 are needed for a majority. Democrats held 215 seats before the election, meaning a net gain of three seats would be enough to cross the threshold.
NBC reported that House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries is expected to be sworn in as speaker on Jan. 3 next year. The future of current Speaker Mike Johnson remained unclear.
Senate control had not been projected
In the Senate races, the Associated Press had called North Carolina for Democrat Roy Cooper, who defeated the Republican candidate and flipped one seat from Republican control. Democrat Chris Pappas also held his seat in New Hampshire.
Even so, neither NBC nor the Associated Press had projected overall Senate control at the time cited in the report.
Oversight Committee plans include Trump family crypto business
If Democrats formally secure the House, they will gain control of committees and subpoena power. NBC reported that Democratic Rep. Robert Garcia, who is expected to become chair of the House Oversight Committee, plans to center investigations on what he described as 「corruption by the Trump family」, including a cryptocurrency business that has brought in 「more than $1 billion」 for Trump.
Other targets listed in the report included alleged abuses by Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Department of Homeland Security, corporate corruption, and the Epstein files.
Jeffries says Democrats have neither ruled out nor chosen impeachment
Some Democrats said they were prepared to pursue a third impeachment against Trump. Jeffries responded that Democrats had 「ruled out no option and determined no option」.
He listed four legislative priorities: reversing cuts to federal Medicaid support, extending Affordable Care Act premium subsidies, restoring congressional authority over tariffs, and stopping war with Iran.
CLARITY Act remained stalled after September vote
The crypto industry’s closely watched market structure bill, the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, or CLARITY Act, failed a Senate procedural vote in September by 50 to 49, short of the 60-vote threshold.
At the time, Democratic lawmakers argued the bill did not address conflicts of interest tied to the Trump family’s crypto holdings. Republican Sen. Cynthia Lummis posted repeatedly on X the day before the election, saying provisions demanded by Democrats had already been included in the bill, but Democrats still voted against it.
Stand With Crypto congratulated endorsed winners
Crypto advocacy group Stand With Crypto congratulated candidates it had endorsed on election night. The group specifically named Democratic Rep. Nellie Pou of New Jersey’s 9th District and Democratic Rep. Greg Landsman of Ohio’s 1st District, saying both had consistently supported clear rules to keep innovation in the United States.
