A proposed Bitcoin fork named eCash has stirred unprecedented ethical controversy with its token allocation plan. Unlike previous splits, eCash would treat the approximately 1.1 million BTC believed to belong to Satoshi Nakamoto differently: only 600,000 eCash would be credited to Satoshi-associated addresses, while the remaining 500,000 would go to early project backers. The proposal, put forward by LayerTwo Labs CEO Paul Sztorc, has drawn sharp reactions from the crypto community.
The Property Rights Crossroads
Satoshi's untouched coins, mined in 2009 and never moved, symbolize Bitcoin's fairness and transparency. Under standard fork logic, the new chain would issue the same amount to all holders. Sztorc's plan breaks that tradition. On X, he rejected accusations of theft, emphasizing that no technical theft is occurring. He argued that Satoshi's unspent coins serve as a critical guarantee of Bitcoin's core rules, noting that even the creator's decision not to move them proves equal rule application. Yet he acknowledged the ethical controversy stands.
Abundant Mines CEO Beau Turner told CoinDesk that Bitcoin's foundation is universal property rights. Any encroachment on Satoshi's coins is a grave ethical mistake. "Bitcoin was created to protect the inalienable property rights of everyone globally," Turner said. "Any suggestion to seize the founder's coins is such a grave error that it's hard to understand how an idea like this even comes up."
Freezing Addresses? Debating Immutability
As the fork nears, discussion has also surfaced about freezing or restricting older, less secure addresses — especially those linked to Satoshi. These topics hit the core of Bitcoin's immutability and social contract. Vijay Selvam, author of "Principles of Bitcoin," contends that freezing Satoshi's coins would irreparably harm Bitcoin's monetary foundation. If such a precedent is set, users can never be certain their holdings remain secure, creating constant anxiety about future rights violations. Selvam stressed that Bitcoin should serve as a time-resistant store of value like digital gold; manipulative forks like eCash threaten that narrative.
The Pressure Tactic Behind the Fork
Paul Sztorc's earlier sidechain proposals, BIP300 and BIP301, gained little community support. The eCash fork is now positioned as both a contingency and a leverage tool: if those proposals continue to face rejection, the fork creates community pressure. Sztorc has stated he may withdraw the eCash plan if his sidechain upgrades are adopted, but so far, developer consensus remains absent.
Whether eCash will achieve lasting economic significance is uncertain, but the social and ethical debate it ignited is already the main story. Most prior forks failed to retain substantial value; eCash, by handling Satoshi's coins differently, puts Bitcoin's ethical legacy under renewed scrutiny.
