Glamsterdam delayed to Q3 2026 as Ethereum raises capacity targets
The Ethereum Foundation has outlined fresh progress on the Glamsterdam upgrade, one of the network’s next major protocol milestones. Originally expected in June, the upgrade is now targeted for the third quarter of 2026. As part of that plan, the Foundation set a new 200 million gas limit floor, a move designed to increase throughput and prepare Ethereum for higher-capacity blocks.
Glamsterdam is framed as more than a simple block parameter adjustment. According to the update, the upgrade is intended to reorganize transaction processing and block verification across the network. The goal is to support larger blocks while preserving overall network stability, reflecting Ethereum’s continuing effort to scale without undermining reliability.
Scaling, state management, and quantum-readiness move in parallel
The Foundation also said it is working on the Hegotà upgrade alongside the Strawmap initiative for quantum-readiness. This suggests Ethereum’s roadmap is being developed across several tracks at once, combining scalability work with security planning and longer-term protocol resilience.
Two important pieces have already been finalized: enshrined Proposer-Builder Separation (ePBS) and EIP-8037. The former is meant to improve block-building efficiency, while the latter is aimed at managing state growth. Together, these decisions show that Ethereum is trying to expand capacity while keeping pressure on state bloat and execution complexity under control.
New protocol leads take charge
Alongside the technical update, the Ethereum Foundation announced leadership changes within its Protocol cluster. The new leads are Will Corcoran, Kev Wedderburn, and Fredrik. The appointments come as the Foundation continues to refine its roadmap for scaling and security, with multiple major upgrades still ahead.
Overall, the revised Glamsterdam timeline does not signal a retreat from Ethereum’s scaling agenda. Instead, the combination of a higher gas floor, finalized protocol components, quantum-readiness planning, and new leadership indicates a broader push to strengthen Ethereum’s performance and long-term architecture heading into 2026 and beyond.
