The DAO Security Fund said on X that it will work with the Ethereum Foundation to fund formal verification of the Vyper compiler, with the Ethereum Foundation committing $100,000 to the effort. The project focuses on a gap between how Vyper contracts are usually reviewed and how they are actually run on Ethereum. Audits and verification today are largely done at the source-code level, while Ethereum executes compiled bytecode, leaving the compiler as the key link between the two. The stated goal is to use machine proofs to show that the Vyper compilation process does not alter the original meaning of the code, and to eventually add a verified compilation mode to the official Vyper compiler. Foresight News had previously reported that The DAO Security Fund was created from unclaimed ETH tied to the 2016 The DAO hack, with a size of about $250 million, and is intended to strengthen Ethereum security.

The DAO Security Fund said in a post on X that it will partner with the Ethereum Foundation to fund formal verification work for the Vyper compiler. The Ethereum Foundation has committed $100,000.

At present, audits and verification for Vyper smart contracts remain at the source-code level. On Ethereum, though, what actually runs is the compiled bytecode, and whether the two match depends on the compiler.

The project aims to use machine proofs to ensure that the Vyper compilation process does not change the original meaning of the code. It also plans to introduce a verified compilation mode in the official Vyper compiler.

Foresight News previously reported that The DAO Security Fund was established from unclaimed ETH linked to the 2016 The DAO hack. The fund is worth about $250 million and is meant to strengthen Ethereum security.
