This positioning underscores Ethereum's unique public-good nature within the blockchain ecosystem—anyone can participate freely, transactions cannot be censored, user privacy is protected, and the protocol does not favor any particular interest group. The foundation believes that only by adhering to these principles can Ethereum fulfill its role as the "world computer" and the bedrock of decentralized finance.

The statement comes at a critical juncture when Ethereum faces technical and governance transitions. MEV abuse occurs when validators or searchers reorder, insert, or censor transactions to extract excess profits, thereby undermining transaction fairness and user trust. Staking centralization is manifested by the concentration of a large amount of ETH in a few large staking pools (e.g., Lido, Coinbase), which, if attacked or colluded, could threaten the network's security and censorship resistance.
The lack of privacy means that all transaction data are publicly visible on-chain, allowing anyone to trace account balances and fund flows. This opens opportunities for malicious actors and limits Ethereum's applicability in regulated financial scenarios. Opaque transaction pipelines refer to users' inability to clearly see how transactions are processed and which nodes participate in validation, raising doubts about the network's fairness. The interim executive director highlighted four key directions: quantum-resistant cryptography, self-verifiable protocol stacks, secure scaling, and sovereign digital cash. Quantum-resistant cryptography aims to protect the Ethereum network from future quantum computer attacks, ensuring the long-term security of user assets. Self-verifiable protocol stacks allow users to verify on-chain data without trusting third parties, thereby enhancing the trustworthiness of decentralized applications.
Secure scaling refers to increasing the network's transaction throughput without sacrificing decentralization or security—Layer-2 technologies like rollups are a concrete embodiment of this direction. Sovereign digital cash implies that Ethereum has the potential to host a digital cash system not controlled by any central authority, giving users true custody of their wealth. These directions will determine whether Ethereum can maintain its leading position in the coming decade and become a core component of humanity's digital infrastructure.
