According to ChainCatcher, Coinglass data reveals that Ethereum's (ETH) 8-hour average funding rate across all exchanges has turned negative at -0.0021%. Among major exchanges, Binance records -0.0039%, OKX -0.0047%, Bybit -0.0051%, and Gate -0.0036%. All platforms show negative funding rates, indicating a market dominated by short positions.

In perpetual swap markets, a negative funding rate means short position holders pay long position holders, typically reflecting bearish sentiment. Notably, Bybit has the most negative rate at -0.0051%, suggesting particularly strong short-side pressure on that exchange, while Gate's rate at -0.0036% is the least negative but still below zero. The narrow spread across exchanges reinforces the prevailing bearish bias. The 8-hour average funding rate is a key indicator of short-term market sentiment, and persistent negative readings signal sustained bearish pressure.

Negative funding rates often attract arbitrageurs who buy spot and short perpetuals to capture the rate, potentially pushing the rate back toward zero. Additionally, concentrated short positioning could lead to a short squeeze if ETH price rebounds. However, the current negative rate is moderate in magnitude and has not reached extreme levels. Market participants should monitor price action and open interest alongside funding rates for a comprehensive view.
