According to MarsBit’s market analysis, Ethereum’s first quarter of 2026 was defined by a “lower fees for greater scale” profile. The report said the network reached historical highs in user count, transaction volume and throughput, showing continued expansion in usage. At the same time, transaction fees, TVL, trading volume and market capitalization declined from the previous quarter, creating a mixed picture in which network activity expanded while several financial and valuation indicators moved lower.

A Shift Toward a Global Financial Settlement Layer

The report also described a change in Ethereum’s core positioning. Rather than being framed only as a DeFi public chain, Ethereum is increasingly being positioned as a global financial settlement layer. Under this framing, the network’s role is tied not only to decentralized finance applications, but also to the on-chain settlement of stablecoins, tokenized funds and commodities.

In terms of asset categories, the report said Ethereum holds a dominant position in stablecoins, tokenized funds and commodities. Institutional participation from BlackRock, JPMorgan and others is accelerating the implementation of tokenized assets. The key contrast in the quarter’s data is that usage metrics reached new highs, while fees, TVL and market capitalization declined quarter over quarter, placing Ethereum’s narrative between network-scale growth and a broader settlement role for institutional financial assets.
