European Crypto Regulation 'Lifeline' Takes Effect

The EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) came into full effect on July 1, mandating that all crypto platforms serving EU customers must hold a CASP (Crypto Asset Service Provider) license. The current approval rate stands at only about 17%, leaving many platforms scrambling to meet compliance deadlines.

Binance, the world's largest exchange, had its Greek license application rejected and subsequently suspended most of its EU services. The exchange is now pursuing a license in France instead.

Bybit has achieved regulatory compliance through an Austrian license, while already-licensed exchanges such as Coinbase, Kraken, and OKX have secured EU-wide passports, allowing them to continue operating across the bloc without further national hurdles.

This regulatory overhaul is accelerating the reshaping of Europe's crypto market, where compliance capability is becoming the defining competitive advantage. Smaller platforms without licenses may be forced to exit the region or partner with licensed entities.
