Regulated cryptocurrency exchange Gemini, founded by the Winklevoss twins, has raised $400 million in its latest growth equity funding round, pushing the company's valuation to $7.1 billion and cementing its position among the most valuable crypto trading platforms globally. The round was led by Morgan Creek, which contributed $75 million; Morgan Creek general partner Sachin Jaitly has joined Gemini's board of directors, becoming the third member alongside Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss. Other participants include 10T, ParaFi, Newflow Partners, Marcy Venture Partners, and the Commonwealth Bank of Australia.

Regulatory Compliance Strategy Wins Over Capital

Gemini has long emphasized a compliance-first approach, a strategy that was initially criticized by some market observers. However, the massive funding round signals strong investor confidence in this path. “Their vision for the role of crypto in redesigning money, the financial system, art, and the Internet, and their track record of incubating and scaling innovative technologies, gives us confidence in Gemini’s ability to continue to be an industry leader,” said Sachin Jaitly. The funds will be used for global expansion, product innovation, and emerging technology investments.

Betting on a Decentralized Metaverse

Interestingly, Gemini’s founders hold a distinctive decentralized vision for the metaverse. In an interview with Forbes, Cameron Winklevoss stated: “There’s a centralized path … that is one step away from being a metaverse, and that’s totally fine. But there is another path, which is the decentralized metaverse and that’s the metaverse where we believe there’s a greater choice, independence, and opportunity, and there is technology that protects the rights and dignity of individuals.” To back this vision, Gemini has already invested through its Frontier Fund in projects like Animoca Brands’ The Sandbox. This stance puts Gemini on a direct collision course with Meta (formerly Facebook), which advocates a centralized metaverse model. Other exchanges are also joining the fray; KuCoin recently launched a $100 million fund to incubate metaverse startups, intensifying competition in the space.
