Google NotebookLM today launched a new feature called Short Video Overviews. Users can upload research papers, reports, or notes, and the AI will automatically generate a 60-second vertical video in the style of TikTok or Instagram Reels. The AI produces both visuals and voiceover, summarizing key points within a minute.
One example showcased by the official NotebookLM account on X featured the absurd "Great Emu War" of 1932, when the Australian military used machine guns to try to drive emus off farmland — and lost. The short video used paper-cut AI illustrations and an AI narrator.
How It Works and Language Limitation
To use the feature, open a notebook in NotebookLM (web or app), then select "Video" from the Studio panel on the right, choose "Short," pick a topic direction (or enter your own), and hit "Generate." The process is straightforward for familiar users. However, the feature currently supports only English, with no timeline for additional languages.
Can 60 Seconds Convey Real Knowledge?
Beyond the novelty, the community has raised concerns: can a 60-second video genuinely convey accurate knowledge? Research documents contain premises, conditions, and context that are essential but easily stripped away. Condensing a 40-page policy report into 60 seconds risks decontextualization rather than true summarization. Short video formats naturally favor digestible narratives, penalizing nuance and conditional statements.
This tension isn't unique to NotebookLM. Google's Audio Overviews have already been criticized for being too conversational, diluting key data in a casual dialogue flow. Short Video Overviews pushes the same problem into an even tighter format.
