Bitcoin Transfer Window Breached in Under Ten Minutes
The attack exploits a brief public key exposure during a Bitcoin transaction. A quantum computer can use that window to reverse-engineer the private key and steal funds before the transfer confirms. According to the study, the final cracking step could take just 9 minutes. Since Bitcoin transactions take roughly 10 minutes to confirm, an attacker would have a 41% chance of winning the race. The threat is no longer a distant hypothetical, but an urgent engineering challenge.
Taproot Upgrade Exposes Keys; 6.9M BTC at Immediate Risk
The Google quantum warning specifically highlights Bitcoin's Taproot upgrade. While it improved speed and privacy, it also makes public keys visible by default - exactly what a quantum attacker needs. An estimated 6.9 million BTC (one-third of all coins in existence) sits in wallets with already-exposed public keys. This includes early mined coins, repeatedly used addresses, and wallets using Taproot's default settings.
2029: The Hard Deadline for Post-Quantum Migration
Today's quantum computers are not yet powerful enough to execute this attack, but they are scaling fast. Google believes that by 2029, quantum systems will reach threatening levels. The report urges the crypto community to migrate to post-quantum cryptography (PQC) - security methods designed to resist quantum attacks. Google's own 'Willow' chip demonstrates how quickly these machines are advancing. For blockchain developers, 2029 is a hard deadline. Upgrading massive networks like Bitcoin and Ethereum takes years; the industry can no longer afford to wait until the next decade.

The research shows quantum attack efficiency has improved by roughly 20 times compared to earlier estimates. Better algorithms and error correction have lowered the bar for cryptographic hacking.
