Zach Pandl, head of research at Grayscale, shared insights on June 4 regarding recent market turbulence following the disclosure that Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy) sold 32 bitcoin on June 1. Although the sale was negligible compared to its total stash of approximately 840,000 BTC worth roughly $55 billion, the rare divestment from a company known for relentless accumulation sent a ripple through market sentiment.
Unusual Sale Shakes Sentiment, Preferred Stock Mechanism Amplifies Pressure
Pandl brought attention to Strategy's variable-rate preferred stock, STRC (Stretch), as a more acute indicator. The instrument carries a target price near $100 and a current dividend yield of 11.5%. When the share price dips below $100, it signals that investors demand a higher return, potentially forcing the company to raise dividends to maintain appeal. This would increase future cash flow strain and could compel further bitcoin sales to raise funds, thereby adding downward pressure on BTC prices.
Leveraged Model Faces Constraints, Diversification Bolsters Long-Term Resilience
Strategy's leveraged bitcoin reserve model is encountering headwinds. Pandl pointed out that at current STRC and MSTR share price levels, the company's ability to continue large-scale bitcoin acquisitions may be curtailed. Over the longer term, however, the migration of bitcoin holdings from highly leveraged digital asset reserve companies to more diversified corporate balance sheets is likely to enhance market robustness and strengthen long-term value support. Pandl expects bitcoin to resume its upward trajectory in the coming months, though in the near term it could underperform crypto sectors that benefit more directly from regulatory clarity.
