Hitachi said it has joined Anthropic’s Critical Infrastructure Defense Initiative, launched in October, as a founding partner. The two companies plan to combine advanced artificial intelligence with operational expertise to strengthen cyber resilience across power, water and rail transportation systems.

Security architecture is shifting
According to Hitachi, critical infrastructure systems can rarely withstand extended downtime. That leaves maintenance teams with limited room to take systems offline for software patching. At the same time, as AI technology advances, the time required for malicious intrusion has been sharply reduced, putting traditional defense models under heavier strain.
Against that backdrop, modern cybersecurity architecture is moving toward an assumption that systems can be breached, with defensive priorities centered more on real-time detection and response than on perimeter protection alone.
Claude to be integrated for vulnerability detection and fixes
Hitachi said that since forming a strategic partnership with Anthropic in May 2026, it has taken part in projects including Glasswing. The company described Glasswing as a collaborative effort focused on protecting the world’s most critical software, advancing cybersecurity practices, accelerating security verification processes, and expanding AI safety guardrails.
Under the Critical Infrastructure Defense Initiative, Anthropic’s Claude AI model will be integrated into Hitachi’s cybersecurity systems to speed up vulnerability detection and remediation.
HMAX Cyber brings together Anthropic, OpenAI and Google Cloud services
Hitachi also said it introduced its operational resilience service HMAX Cyber in September as part of its next-generation HMAX solutions. The service combines technologies from Anthropic, OpenAI and Google Cloud, along with Hitachi’s protection experience in the rail and energy sectors, covering three areas: governance, identification, and managed recovery.
Hitachi Rail has already adopted an Agentic Security Operations Center, or Agentic SOC, developed with Google Cloud. The company said the deployment is meant to support autonomous threat response in live operations.
Key points highlighted in the report
- Hitachi has become a founding partner in Anthropic’s Critical Infrastructure Defense Initiative, with a focus on cybersecurity and system resilience.
- Because critical infrastructure systems cannot easily tolerate prolonged downtime, and because AI has shortened attack response windows, security design is shifting toward an assumption of compromise.
- Claude will be added to Hitachi’s security stack to accelerate real-time vulnerability detection and patching.
- HMAX Cyber combines technologies from Anthropic, OpenAI and Google Cloud with Hitachi’s industrial experience.
- Hitachi Rail has deployed an Agentic SOC developed with Google Cloud to improve autonomous threat response capabilities.
