Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing (HKEX) said on Oct. 16 that it aims to complete the move to a T+1 settlement cycle for Hong Kong’s cash equities market in the second half of 2028, subject to market readiness and regulatory approval. The exchange disclosed the timeline in its consultation conclusions on shortening the settlement cycle for the city’s stock spot market.
According to HKEX, feedback showed broad support for adopting T+1 in Hong Kong’s securities market. The consultation drew 109 non-duplicate responses from market participants, including brokers, custodians, investment managers, industry associations, technology vendors and investors.
Respondents said a T+1 cycle could improve market efficiency, reduce settlement risk, raise capital efficiency and help reinforce Hong Kong’s competitiveness as an international financial center. HKEX said the proposed transition schedule was set after taking stakeholder views into account.
