Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing, or HKEX, has published its consultation conclusions on shortening the settlement cycle for Hong Kong’s cash equities market, with the paper showing broad market support for moving to a T+1 settlement cycle. After reviewing feedback from market participants, HKEX said it aims to complete the transition in the second half of 2028, subject to market readiness and regulatory approval. The consultation drew 109 non-duplicate responses from a cross-section of the market, including brokers, custodians, investment managers, industry associations, technology vendors, and investors. Respondents supported the adoption of T+1 in Hong Kong and agreed that the move could improve market efficiency, reduce settlement risk, boost capital efficiency, and strengthen Hong Kong’s competitiveness as an international financial center.
