Event Overview: Jefferies Liquidates Bitcoin Position, Rotates into Gold
Christopher Wood, the global head of equity strategy at Jefferies, has executed a decisive shift in his flagship Greed & Fear model portfolio, eliminating its entire 10% allocation to Bitcoin. According to Bloomberg, the position has been replaced by a 5% allocation to physical gold and a 5% allocation to gold-mining equities. Wood was an early institutional advocate for Bitcoin, first incorporating the cryptocurrency into the portfolio in December 2020 during the pandemic-era stimulus and fears of fiat currency debasement. He later doubled the allocation to 10% in 2021. Since that initial addition, Bitcoin has surged approximately 325%, while gold gained 145% over the same period. Despite this impressive return, Wood argues that the accelerating development of quantum computing presents an existential threat to Bitcoin's cryptographic underpinnings, undermining its ability to serve as a long-term store of value.
"While Greed & Fear does not believe that the quantum issue is about to hit the Bitcoin price dramatically in the near term, the store-of-value concept is clearly on less solid foundation from the standpoint of a long-term pension portfolio," Wood wrote.
Quantum Computing Presents Structural Risks to Bitcoin
Bitcoin's security relies on elliptic curve cryptography (ECDSA) that is computationally infeasible to break with classical computers. However, a sufficiently powerful quantum computer could theoretically employ Shor's algorithm to derive private keys from public keys, enabling unauthorized transactions and eroding trust in the network. Security researchers estimate that under certain conditions, 20% to 50% of Bitcoin's total supply — between 4 million and 10 million BTC — could be vulnerable. Researchers at Coinbase have identified approximately 6.5 million BTC held in older wallet formats where public keys are already exposed on-chain, making them susceptible to so-called long-range quantum attacks. Unlike attacks that require active interception, these attacks can be performed retroactively using historical transaction data, posing a particularly insidious risk to long-dormant coins.
Divergent Views: Looming Threat or Overblown Fear?
The quantum threat has sparked a growing divide within the Bitcoin ecosystem. Some developers argue that the risk is underestimated and advocate for proactive adoption of quantum-resistant signature schemes such as Lamport signatures. Others, including Blockstream CEO Adam Back, maintain that the threat remains distant and that quiet preparatory work toward quantum-resistant signatures is preferable to alarming investors. The debate has reached mainstream finance: BlackRock has listed quantum computing as a potential long-term risk in its spot Bitcoin ETF disclosures, while Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko recently suggested there is a 50% likelihood of a meaningful quantum breakthrough within five years. For Wood, this very uncertainty strengthens the case for gold, which he describes as a historically tested hedge amid a volatile geopolitical and technological landscape. He concluded that the long-term questions raised by quantum computing are "only positive for gold."
Gold Hits Record Highs as Safe-Haven Demand Surges
Gold has climbed to record highs this month, topping $4,600 per ounce, as investors flock to safe-haven assets amid escalating geopolitical tensions involving Iran and growing expectations that the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates following softer U.S. inflation and labor market data. Wood's repositioning reflects a broader institutional recalibration: while acknowledging Bitcoin's exceptional early returns, professional investors increasingly view technological disruption as a factor that could upend the asset's value proposition decades from now. Quantum computing, while not an imminent threat to current crypto markets, is entering the risk calculus of major allocators. Several prominent figures in the crypto industry have warned that a quantum breakthrough within five years would force an emergency upgrade of underlying cryptographic protocols across the entire ecosystem. The Bitcoin community is exploring transitions from ECDSA to Schnorr signatures or post-quantum cryptosystems, but any hard fork-level change carries risks of splitting the network. Until practical quantum-resistant solutions are deployed, gold retains its appeal as the traditional "safe haven" asset.
