Kalshi, a regulated prediction market platform, publicly released its first-ever insider trading enforcement results on July 23. The two cases involve a video editor for top YouTuber MrBeast and a former Republican candidate for California governor. Penalties include fines, profit clawbacks, and account suspensions.
MrBeast Editor Profited from Non-Public Info
Artem Kaptur, a video editor for MrBeast (James Donaldson), was flagged by Kalshi's monitoring system for near-perfect trading success rates in markets linked to MrBeast, especially on low-probability bets. Investigators found Kaptur used his access to internal data on video content and subscriber counts to place trades worth about $4,000. Kalshi froze his profits, imposed a $20,000 fine (5x the original stake), and banned him from the platform for two years.
Candidate Bet on Own Election Breached Rules
Kyle Langford, a former Republican candidate for California governor, posted on social media in May 2025 his $200 bet on winning the election, urging followers to do the same. Kalshi said candidates may view market predictions but are strictly prohibited from trading in their own markets. Langford was fined $1,000 (10x the stake) and banned for five years. Fines will be donated to a nonprofit promoting derivatives consumer education.
Kalshi Ramps Up Oversight: 200+ Investigations, New Audit Committee
Robert DeNault, Kalshi's head of enforcement, said the platform has launched about 200 insider trading investigations in the past year, with over a dozen converted into formal cases reported to the CFTC. Under the Trump administration, prediction markets have surged to over 200,000 active markets. To scale oversight, Kalshi established an independent surveillance and audit committee that will regularly publish investigation data and enforcement progress. DeNault stated, “No financial exchange can be completely immune from bad actors. We are committed to deterring and identifying those who attempt to cheat.”
