South Korean retail investors piled into chip heavyweights Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix during the sharp selloff tied to the market’s “Black Monday,” only to turn into net sellers as the sector rebounded. Korea Exchange data cited by Etoday showed individuals bought a combined KRW 3.89 trillion worth of the two stocks, including KRW 1.10 trillion in Samsung Electronics and KRW 2.79 trillion in SK Hynix, on the day the shares dropped 10.7% and 15.37%, respectively. Retail money effectively absorbed stock sold by foreign and institutional investors.
The reversal came quickly. On July 14 and 15, individual investors sold KRW 1.45 trillion of Samsung Electronics and KRW 3.70 trillion of SK Hynix, bringing total net selling in the two names to KRW 5.15 trillion. Estimated average purchase prices on July 13 were about KRW 261,700 for Samsung Electronics and KRW 1,938,500 for SK Hynix, while average selling prices over the following two sessions were about KRW 259,400 and KRW 1,849,300. Based on those July 13 purchases, retail investors were estimated to have lost roughly KRW 138.2 billion. Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics rose about 9.8% over July 14 and 15, and SK Hynix gained about 12.8%, leaving many dip buyers out of much of the rebound after selling early.
South Korean stocks rebounded quickly after the market’s “Black Monday,” but retail investors who aggressively bought semiconductor leaders into the drop ended up selling into the recovery.
According to Korea Exchange data cited by Etoday, individual investors bought a combined KRW 3.89 trillion worth of Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. That included KRW 1.10 trillion in net buying of Samsung Electronics and KRW 2.79 trillion in SK Hynix. On that day, the two stocks fell 10.7% and 15.37%, respectively, with retail investors taking the other side of selling from foreign and institutional investors.
Retail flows flipped as chip stocks rebounded
As semiconductor shares recovered, individuals quickly became sellers. Over July 14 and 15, retail investors sold KRW 1.45 trillion of Samsung Electronics and KRW 3.70 trillion of SK Hynix, for combined net selling of KRW 5.15 trillion across the two stocks.
Data showed the estimated average purchase price for Samsung Electronics shares bought on July 13 was about KRW 261,700, while the average selling price over the next two sessions was about KRW 259,400. For SK Hynix, the estimated average buy price was about KRW 1,938,500 and the average sell price was about KRW 1,849,300.
Estimated loss reached KRW 138.2 billion
Based on the July 13 purchases, retail investors as a group were estimated to have lost about KRW 138.2 billion. At the same time, Samsung Electronics climbed about 9.8% across July 14 and 15, while SK Hynix rose about 12.8% over the same period. Because a large share of dip-buying funds sold early in the initial rebound on July 14, those investors did not fully participate in the later advance.
