As March 2025 draws to a close, Bitcoin's total hashrate recently touched an all-time high of 862 exahash per second (EH/s), currently hovering around 853 EH/s. While BTC prices have climbed over 26% since the halving, miners are earning considerably less than before the event. However, companies equipped with the latest generation of ASIC machines enjoy a significant advantage. Today's top mining hardware operates within a hashrate spectrum from 400 TH/s to 860 TH/s, with liquid-cooled models leading the charge.
King of Hashrate: Bitmain Antminer S21e XP Hydro 3U
Bitmain's Antminer S21e XP Hydro 3U tops the list with a peak hashrate of 860 TH/s. Drawing 11,180 watts (W), it maintains an energy efficiency of 13 joules per terahash (J/T). The integration of direct liquid-to-chip (DLC) cooling technology makes this possible. Unlike traditional air-cooled setups, DLC targets thermal output at the source, ensuring sustained peak performance even during prolonged high-intensity operations. Liquid-cooled systems—whether immersion or hydro-powered—have emerged as the undisputed sovereigns in this thermal arms race.
Silver and Bronze: Auradine AH3880 and Bitmain S21 XP+ Hydro
Claiming the runner-up spot is Auradine's U.S.-engineered AH3880 hydro-cooled unit. In 'turbo mode,' it delivers 600 TH/s at 16.5 J/T; under normal mode, it offers 450 TH/s at a frugal 14.5 J/T. Third place goes to Bitmain's Antminer S21 XP+ Hydro, generating 500 TH/s with a power consumption of 5,500 W and an efficiency of roughly 11 J/T. This unit supports multiple cooling fluids, including antifreeze, purified water, and deionized water.
Other Notable Models: Bitdeer Sealminer A2 Pro Hydro and Microbt Whatsminer M66S++
Bitdeer's Sealminer A2 Pro Hydro, released this month, produces approximately 500 TH/s with an efficiency of 14.9 J/T while consuming 7,450W. Microbt's Whatsminer M66S++ ASIC generates 348 TH/s under standard conditions, overclockable to 400-430 TH/s, with a power draw of 5,394 W and an efficiency of 15.5 J/T. Although legacy air-cooled miners retain a foothold—with manufacturers continuing to roll out advanced air-cooled iterations—their operational metrics pale in comparison to liquid-cooled thermal titans.
Advantages and Challenges of Liquid Cooling
Liquid-cooled miners also operate at quieter decibel levels, a stark contrast to the cacophonous drone of traditional units, prompting some firms to migrate to liquid-cooled fleets to sidestep acoustic grievances. On the flip side, these systems carry a premium price tag and require substantial upfront investment in specialized infrastructure. Nevertheless, liquid cooling has become the undisputed king of Bitcoin mining hardware in 2025, and it will continue to drive hashrate growth and efficiency improvements.
