PeckShield data shows 40 major hacks in the crypto space in May, with total losses of about $81.7 million, a month-on-month drop of 87.4%. Cross-chain attacks accounted for 41% of losses, with major incidents involving SUPERFORTUNE AI, Verus-Ethereum Bridge, and THORChain.
According to monitoring by blockchain security firm PeckShield, the crypto sector saw 40 major hacks in May 2026, with total losses of about $81.7 million. This marks an 87.4% decline from April's $647 million.
Cross-chain protocols were again the main target. Although just 8 cross-chain attacks made up 20% of all incidents, they caused $33.28 million in losses, or 41% of the monthly total, highlighting cross-chain security weaknesses. Major incidents included SUPERFORTUNE AI (approx. $15.18 million), the Verus-Ethereum Bridge (approx. $11.58 million, later returned), and THORChain (approx. $10 million). While the returned Verus-Ethereum Bridge funds eased the overall damage, cross-chain vulnerabilities remain a serious industry challenge.
