According to Cointelegraph, Microsoft has warned users about a malware strain identified as “Crypto Clipper” that is spreading through USB drives. The alert is tied to security risks facing crypto users, particularly those who handle wallet addresses, exchange accounts or onchain transactions. A crypto clipper is generally understood as malware designed to interfere with cryptocurrency-related activity, including the handling of copied wallet information.

Microsoft said the malware does more than operate as a simple stealing tool. It blends data theft with remote code execution, which Microsoft described as “turning a financially motivated stealer into a lightweight backdoor.” That characterization places the focus on the malware’s combined functions: stealing information while also giving attackers a way to execute code remotely on affected systems.
The warning highlights both the distribution method and the malware’s expanded capability. USB drives can help malicious software move through removable storage devices, while the pairing of data theft and remote code execution raises the severity of the threat for users managing crypto-related data. Microsoft’s alert therefore centers on device hygiene and caution when using external USB drives in environments where crypto wallets, addresses or transaction details are handled.
