Monad Foundation has announced a subsidy program to provide dedicated signing laptops for protocol teams with a total value locked (TVL) of $2.5 million or more. This initiative aims to bolster security in multisignature, treasury, and other critical operations. Eligible teams can apply for the subsidy, which may require additional security training and standard KYC procedures.

Subsidy Program Details

The foundation emphasizes the necessity of using dedicated devices for signing operations, separate from everyday tasks like web browsing or coding, to prevent security breaches. Co-founder Keone Hon previously highlighted the risks of using everyday computers for signing, noting their vulnerability to compromise. The exact subsidy value remains undisclosed, but future incentives to further encourage secure signing practices are under consideration.

Security Context: Recent Incidents Highlight Risks

The subsidy comes in the wake of several security incidents on Monad. On May 19, the Monad chain suffered a $7.645 million eBTC theft, with the hacker netting only $860,000. Earlier, Echo Protocol reported an $816K loss due to unauthorized eBTC minting. Kelp and other DeFi protocols recovered 17,426.2 rsETH from an attacker. These events underscore the importance of dedicated hardware for signing operations. Monad network itself remained unaffected during the EchoProtocol breach, but the ecosystem demands enhanced security.

Market Reaction and Outlook

Following the announcement, Monad's native token MON rose 4.16%, reflecting positive market sentiment. Analysts view the subsidy as a strategic move to attract more TVL by mitigating security risks. The foundation may expand eligibility to smaller protocols in the future, potentially setting a new industry standard for secure signing practices in DeFi.
