MoonPay has added crypto buying to ChatGPT, letting users generate checkout links inside the OpenAI chat interface instead of leaving the conversation to begin a purchase. The app supports digital assets including Bitcoin, XRP, Solana, and USDC.
The company released its dedicated app in the ChatGPT app store last Friday, joining a growing list of crypto-related tools on the platform alongside Kraken, OKX, CryptoAudit, and RealOpen. Most of the existing crypto apps on ChatGPT have focused on on-chain data and live prices. MoonPay is pushing the process closer to execution by bringing the purchase flow into the chat experience.
Users can ask about a token, then request a purchase
According to MoonPay, a user can first ask ChatGPT about a specific cryptocurrency and then submit an instruction to buy a set amount. ChatGPT then creates a MoonPay checkout link that sends the user to MoonPay’s website, where the user completes KYC verification and links a wallet.
Kevin Arifin, MoonPay’s blockchain engineer and product lead, said the company has already seen AI show commercial value in e-commerce, with many people relying on ChatGPT for shopping guidance. He said people are now also using ChatGPT to research personal finance, and he was surprised there had not already been a direct channel to fund an account and buy crypto from that setting.
Purchases still finish outside the chat window
Arifin described the app as closer to having a broker next to the user, focused on explaining the asset being considered rather than giving financial advice. He said MoonPay’s current role resembles Shopify in that it mainly provides checkout infrastructure, while larger language models may later handle more complex actions than simply sending a purchase page.
Once a user signs in to an existing MoonPay account, the system can recognize the session, pull in the previously used payment method, and send purchased tokens to the selected wallet address. Still, the transaction is not completed entirely inside the ChatGPT conversation. Users must open the generated link and finish the process on MoonPay’s site.
Part of a broader AI push across trading and payments
The ChatGPT app fits into MoonPay’s wider AI strategy. Earlier this month, the company acquired AI trading startup Dawn Labs and introduced Dawn CLI, a trading assistant that converts plain-language commands into automated prediction-market strategies. MoonPay also launched the virtual Mastercard product MoonAgents Card, which allows AI agents to spend stablecoins from crypto wallets with online merchants.
Arifin said the goal of the ChatGPT app is not autonomous AI trading, but helping consumers understand how crypto works inside a conversational setting. He added that the current model is limited by the OpenAI ecosystem, and pointed to AI clients such as OpenClaw, which can run locally and interact more deeply with user devices, as a possible next stage.
