Mysten Labs, the developer behind the Sui Layer 1 blockchain, has changed its top leadership, with company president Kevin Boon taking over as chief executive officer from Evan Cheng. Cheng will remain chief technology officer and will personally lead a newly created internal AI business unit, according to a public letter he published on Oct. 16 and a post on X. Boon previously served as Mysten Labs’ chief legal officer before being promoted to president. Cheng said he had planned for this transition when Boon was named president. The new AI division will have its own engineering and product development functions and is being structured to reduce reliance on outside parties. Cheng said the unit will follow the model of Mysten’s on-chain finance business group established this summer. The AI effort will focus on agent trust products and AI-native infrastructure, with products and services tied to Sui and Walrus. Walrus, Mysten’s decentralized storage protocol, went live on mainnet in March 2025. Cheng also highlighted Verifiable Agent Arbiter, an evidence layer developed with Google Cloud and announced on Oct. 6, which is designed to help enterprises prove that their AI agents acted within authorized limits.

Mysten Labs, the company developing the Sui Layer 1 blockchain, has named president Kevin Boon as its new CEO, replacing Evan Cheng. Cheng will stay on as chief technology officer and will personally lead a newly established internal AI business unit.

In a public letter published on Oct. 16, Cheng said Boon had accepted the role. He also announced the change on X. Before becoming president, Boon had served as Mysten Labs’ chief legal officer. Cheng wrote, 「I planned for this day when I appointed him president.」

Mysten creates a standalone AI business unit

According to Cheng, the new AI division will have independent engineering and product development functions, a structure meant to reduce reliance on external parties. He said the unit will follow the model of Mysten’s on-chain finance business division that was set up this summer, and will focus on agent trust products and AI-native infrastructure.

Cheng said the handover is intended to free up more of his time for technical leadership while allowing him to keep supporting the Sui and Walrus ecosystems. 「This makes my scope of responsibilities more manageable.」

AI products will be built around Sui and Walrus

Cheng said the goal of the AI business is to let agents carry out tasks autonomously within limits set by users, with related products and services anchored to Sui and Walrus. Walrus is Mysten’s decentralized storage protocol and launched its mainnet in March 2025.

He also singled out Verifiable Agent Arbiter, an evidence layer developed with Google Cloud and announced on Oct. 6. The system is meant to let enterprises prove that their AI agents acted within the scope of their authorization.

Under the design, detailed agent records are kept in customer-controlled Google Cloud Storage, while cryptographic proofs are stored on Walrus and coordinated on Sui. Initial enterprise deployment plans will come before broader availability.
