OpenAI has rolled out a new $100-per-month subscription tier, placing it between the existing $20 Plus plan and the $200 Pro plan. The main selling point is clear: Codex usage is set at 5 times the allowance of Plus. The company now lists Free, Go ($8 a month), Plus, Pro, and this newly added tier, sharpening the price ladder around users who need heavier coding access.
Sam Altman said on X on the 10th that Codex has been getting a lot of attention, and that OpenAI launched the $100 ChatGPT Pro option in response to demand. The timing stands out. According to the source material, Anthropic’s annual recurring revenue has passed $30 billion, ahead of OpenAI’s roughly $24 billion to $25 billion, with Claude Code and Claude Cowork cited as the main growth drivers.
Codex growth is giving OpenAI room to split pricing
OpenAI also shared the usage figures behind the move. Codex now has more than 3 million weekly active users worldwide. Over the past three months, that figure has grown 5x, while monthly growth has topped 70%. That pace gives OpenAI a reason to separate plans more aggressively on quotas. It also helps explain why the company has put limits on daily allowances in the Plus tier. In simple terms, Codex has grown large enough to justify tighter product segmentation.
Promotional offer raises the ceiling for new users
OpenAI is also pairing the launch with a limited-time promotion. New subscribers who join before May 31, 2026 can receive up to 10 times the Codex usage available under Plus. That lowers the barrier for testing the product at a higher volume and makes the new plan look less like a midpoint option and more like a direct push for developers with frequent coding workloads.
Based on the disclosed details, this is not just a routine pricing update. Codex usage is climbing quickly, rival products are gaining traction with developers, and OpenAI is adjusting its subscription structure to compete more directly for coding-focused users.
