OpenAI Codex lead Thibault Sottiaux, known as Tibo, used Day 10 of his self-imposed 28-day shipping challenge to issue another full usage reset instead of a product improvement. The reset was announced on Oct. 15 Taipei time and marked the third such day after similar resets on Day 6 and Day 8. The challenge, unveiled on Oct. 5 Taipei time, commits Tibo to either shipping one clear improvement relevant to most Codex and ChatGPT Work users each day or granting a full reset of usage limits. Under that framework, resets refill usage caps for ChatGPT Work and Codex on both the five-hour and weekly windows. From Day 3 through Day 10, five days brought feature updates and three days ended in full resets. The changes disclosed over that span included the rollout of GPT-6 to all ChatGPT users, a banked reset for paid accounts, live task adjustments with GPT-6.1 Sol Ultrafast, next-prompt suggestions in the Codex desktop app, a jump in GPT-6.1 Sol default context from 272,000 to 500,000 tokens, and a projected 60% cut in disk data used by the ChatGPT and Codex desktop apps.

OpenAI Codex lead Thibault Sottiaux, or Tibo, announced another full usage reset on Oct. 15 Taipei time as his 28-day challenge reached Day 10. It was the third reset day in the stretch, following earlier resets on Day 6 and Day 8.

At 12:55 p.m. Taipei time on Oct. 15, Sottiaux posted on X: 「Day 10/ Reset」. He also wrote, 「The reports of my reset button being lost are greatly exaggerated」.

Third reset replaces a product improvement

Sottiaux launched the 28-day challenge in the early hours of Oct. 5, Taipei time. Under the rule he posted then, each day would bring either 「one thing that is a clear improvement and relevant for most codex/work users」 or a full reset.

In practice, a full reset restores usage limits for ChatGPT Work and Codex across both the five-hour quota and the weekly quota.

As of Oct. 15, the challenge had run for 10 days. Day 6 on Oct. 11, Day 8 on Oct. 13, and Day 10 on Oct. 15 all ended with full resets, with one day between each of those reset announcements.

What shipped from Day 3 to Day 10

Across the eight days from Day 3 through Day 10, five days produced improvements and three days delivered full resets. Dates below follow the Taipei-time posting day.

  • Day 3, Oct. 8: ChatGPT rolled out GPT-6 to all users, while paid accounts received one extra banked reset.
  • Day 4, Oct. 9: users could make adjustments while a task was running, with the model responding in real time, and GPT-6.1 Sol Ultrafast was introduced.
  • Day 5, Oct. 10: the Codex desktop app began suggesting a user’s next input, and usage under the Pro plan did not count against limits.
  • Day 6, Oct. 11: full reset.
  • Day 7, Oct. 12: GPT-6.1 Sol default context length was raised from 272,000 to 500,000 tokens.
  • Day 8, Oct. 13: full reset.
  • Day 9, Oct. 14: data stored on disk by the ChatGPT and Codex desktop apps was projected to fall by 60%.
  • Day 10, Oct. 15: full reset.

Context length increase and desktop storage change

The Day 7 update lifted GPT-6.1 Sol’s default context length from 272,000 to 500,000 tokens, an increase of about 80%.

Sottiaux said that change would reduce how often long conversations need to be compressed. Users can still adjust the setting themselves, with the maximum reaching 1 million tokens.

The Day 9 change was described by Sottiaux as a 「Small ship」. According to the report, it came after heavy users said disk space had become a problem. The stated result was that data stored on disk by the ChatGPT and Codex desktop apps was expected to decline by 60%.

Banked reset versus full reset

On Day 3, when GPT-6 was rolled out to all ChatGPT users, paid accounts also received a banked reset.

According to PC Watch, a full reset immediately refills usage caps for everyone across the five-hour and weekly windows. A banked reset is stored in an account first, allowing the user to apply it later. The report said the Day 3 banked reset was issued to paid accounts as part of a milestone marking 40 million active users.

Where the challenge stands now

The 28-day plan, announced on Oct. 5 Taipei time, commits Sottiaux to posting either a noticeable improvement for most Codex and ChatGPT Work users or a full reset each day.

By Oct. 15, 10 days had been completed. Three of those days — Day 6, Day 8, and Day 10 — were reset days, while the others brought product changes.
