Rapid7 has disclosed a crypto phishing campaign called Operation Asterix that targeted about 885,000 phone numbers across multiple countries and redirected victims to fake wallet service websites, according to Cointelegraph. The cybersecurity firm said 5,576 of those phone numbers were matched to Binance user accounts and placed in an attack queue. Rapid7 said the attackers used fake applications posing as Ledger, Trezor, and Exodus to steal seed phrases, while also contacting victims through spoofed customer support emails and phone calls. The firm also found that, among more than 316,000 phone numbers in Germany, 43,066 matched crypto trading accounts, for a hit rate of about 13.6%. The activity also included a bulk phone number verification tool aimed at Kraken accounts, and the investigation found extensive use of AI tools in the phishing operation. Separately, blockchain security company Hacken said phishing attacks and social engineering scams caused $306 million in losses in the first quarter, making up most of the crypto sector’s $482 million total losses.
