River AI, a full-stack AI company founded by Igor Babuschkin, a co-founder of xAI, has closed a $1.1 billion funding round, the company announced on Aug. 11 via Business Wire. General Catalyst and AMP PBC led the round, with Nvidia and AMD Ventures joining as strategic investors and Y Combinator and Temasek also among the participants. River AI said the money will go toward building an open AI technology stack, plus tools that let developers and enterprises train, fine-tune and deploy their own AI models. On the product side, the company says its API can handle complex reinforcement learning training in 15 to 20 minutes without a dedicated infrastructure team. It also claims the cost is two to four times lower than closed-source alternatives, a pitch aimed at teams that want to run their own model training without heavy infrastructure overhead.
