Strategy has sold 6,948 BTC in 2026, raising $431.8 million under its bitcoin monetization program, according to Protos and the company’s filings.
Sales began after Strategy flagged a monetization plan
Michael Saylor first said in May that Strategy would soon begin selling bitcoin. In late June, the company disclosed that it would sell accumulated BTC as part of a monetization program designed to raise $1.25 billion for its USD reserve.
Strategy said the proceeds would be used for preferred stock dividends, digital credit securities, or Class A common stock.
Five BTC sales recorded this year
Strategy’s K-8 filings show that the first sale took place in late May, when the company sold 32 BTC for $2.5 million. Bitcoin was worth $77,135 at the time.
It then sold bitcoin in four additional batches:
- 1,363 BTC between June 29 and June 30
- 2,225 BTC between July 1 and July 5
- 1,638 BTC between July 27 and August 2
- 1,690 BTC between August 3 and August 9
The latest filing reflects the most recent sale.
Those sales brought in $80.8 million, $135.2 million, $104.73 million, and $108.6 million, respectively. Protos said bitcoin has fallen 13% since the selling started.
Strategy bought bitcoin 20 times and sold it five times in 2026
Before June 21, Strategy was mostly adding to its holdings. The company built up 163,554 BTC in 2026, with those purchases costing more than $12.7 billion.

Protos said Strategy has bought bitcoin 20 times this year and sold it five times.
Current holdings, valuation, and cost basis
Strategy made its first bitcoin purchase in August 2020, when it spent $250 million to buy 21,454 BTC.
As of August 9, the company held 840,447 BTC worth $53.82 billion. It has spent $63.36 billion acquiring that bitcoin, leaving it down $9.5 billion on its BTC investment, based on the figures in the report.
Even after including Strategy’s $4.65 billion USD reserve alongside its bitcoin holdings, the combined total still stood $4.9 billion below what the company paid to acquire all of its BTC, according to Protos.
Saylor’s earlier remarks return to focus
Protos said the move to sell BTC drew criticism from followers who had taken Saylor at his word when he said he would not sell bitcoin.
Strategy had previously sold BTC only once, in 2022, before buying significantly more bitcoin two days later.
In February 2025, when bitcoin was above $84,000, Saylor said, 「Sell a kidney if you must, but keep the BTC.」 The asset has since fallen 24% to $64,042, while Strategy has now moved ahead with sales.
