Shop.com Adds Crypto Checkout Option
At the Market America Worldwide Shop.com 2021 International Convention, Shop.com president and COO Steve Ashley announced that Shop.com sites around the world will begin accepting cryptocurrency payments through Bitpay. The new option allows customers to use bitcoin, ether, bitcoin cash, and several other digital assets to buy products on the company’s e-commerce platforms, a move the company framed as the next chapter of its business.
By partnering with Bitpay, one of the best-known crypto payment service providers, Shop.com is extending digital asset payments across its international online storefronts. Ashley said the company plans to make the offering available on Shop.com sites in all of its market countries, signaling a broad rollout rather than a limited pilot.
International Reach Supports the Strategy
Shop.com already has a meaningful presence in online retail. According to Similarweb data cited in the report, the site ranks 26,133 globally and 191 in the e-commerce and shopping category. The platform is owned by Market America, an MLM company founded in 1992 that acquired Shop.com in late 2010 for an undisclosed amount.
Bitpay chief commercial officer Sonny Singh said the company’s international footprint makes it a strong fit for crypto payments. He noted that only 40% of Shop.com’s volume comes from the United States, underscoring its global customer base. In markets such as Taiwan, Thailand, Argentina, Brazil, and Indonesia, he said, payment acceptance can be more difficult and credit card access is not always universal, making crypto a potentially cheaper and faster alternative.
Company Positions Move as a Lead in Retail Innovation
Market America founder and CEO JR Ridinger said Shop.com continues to set trends under Ashley’s leadership. He argued that while many online retailers are still working out how to implement cryptocurrency as a payment method, Shop.com has already put that plan into action.
The Shop.com website has also added messaging highlighting crypto acceptance and directs users to a page explaining how to use the Bitpay payment system. The site further says customers can earn cashback on thousands of products with Bitpay. Taken together, the rollout shows how established e-commerce platforms are increasingly testing digital assets as a practical payment tool, especially in cross-border retail settings.
