Solana is moving forward with the Alpenglow consensus upgrade, which aims to reduce transaction finality time from roughly 12.8 seconds to around 150 milliseconds. The upgrade is expected to activate through Agave 4.3 in October. Co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko says the change is most significant for large-value payments, while ordinary users might not feel much difference. Finality, he explains, is stronger than typical transaction confirmation because it guarantees state changes cannot be undone.
Solana is advancing plans to overhaul its consensus architecture under the Alpenglow initiative, a project meant to bring transaction finality close to instant. The upgrade would cut finality time from roughly 12.8 seconds to about 150 milliseconds. Activation is expected through Agave 4.3, with a target date of October. Anatoly Yakovenko, Solana's co-founder, said the faster finality window matters mainly for large-value payments. Ordinary users, he added, may not notice a significant change. He also stressed the difference between finality and transaction confirmation: finality provides a stronger guarantee that state changes cannot be reversed, and under the current TowerBFT consensus that guarantee takes about 12.8 seconds to achieve. U.Today reported the update.
