Solana has activated a mainnet feature that lowers its target slot time from 400 milliseconds to 350 milliseconds, the network’s first reduction since launch. The change is live in Mainnet Beta at slot 440,208,000 in epoch 1019, according to Solana’s explorer. Jacob Creech, Solana Foundation vice president of technology, said Friday that 300 milliseconds is next. The upgrade follows a staged path toward 200 milliseconds, with each 50-millisecond step gated separately and blocked if skip rates rise too high. Solana says validator-client improvements in Turbine and Replay made the plan possible, and that the broader upgrade is treated as a breaking change.

Solana has activated a mainnet feature that lowers its target slot time from 400 milliseconds to 350 milliseconds, the network’s first slot-time reduction since launch.

Solana’s explorer shows the SIMD-0525 feature active on Mainnet Beta at slot 440,208,000 in epoch 1019. The shorter slot window gives leaders less time to complete blocks and is meant to speed up transaction confirmations for users.

The rollout is staged, not a jump to 200 milliseconds

For validators, this is not an immediate move to the planned 200-millisecond endpoint. Solana is using a staged transition, with each additional 50-millisecond reduction set to activate through a separate feature gate in a later epoch. If block skip rates climb, the network can pause before moving lower.

Jacob Creech, vice president of technology at the Solana Foundation, said on Friday that this is Solana’s first slot-time reduction and that 300 milliseconds is the next target.

Four steps to 200 milliseconds

The approved sequence moves from 400 milliseconds to 350, then 300, 250 and finally 200 milliseconds. The Solana Foundation says the network will not proceed to the next reduction if block skip rates are too high.

Shorter slots compress the time for a leader to finish blocks, for the next leader to receive transactions through Gulf Stream, and for other validators to replay and vote on blocks. Solana said improvements to validator clients, especially Turbine and Replay, made the plan possible.

Protocol settings stay the same

The upgrade does not change the number of ticks per slot, the four-slot leader span, or the number of slots in an epoch. Because slots now arrive more quickly, validators move through epochs in less elapsed time.

Solana labels the broader upgrade as a breaking change and says the required indexing changes have yet to be determined. Its documentation still lists the default slot duration as 400 milliseconds, even though the explorer already shows the first 350-millisecond feature as active.

No calendar date has been set for the 300-millisecond step

Anza’s tentative Agave v4.2 schedule targets all four staged reductions for mainnet activation. Solana’s upgrade page does not list a calendar date or a specific epoch for the 300-millisecond step, and the network will not move to that reduction if block skip rates are too high.
