Sony Music Publishing and Warner Chappell Music have sued Anthropic in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, according to The Verge, seeking damages tied to "tens of thousands" of copyrighted works. The complaint alleges that Anthropic illegally downloaded, scraped, and distributed copyrighted material to develop and train its Claude family of AI models. Plaintiffs are seeking up to $150,000 for each work at issue, plus up to $25,000 for each alleged removal of identifiable copyright management information. The filing alleges that Mann used BitTorrent to download more than 5 million pirated books and that employees downloaded at least 2 million items from Pirate Library Mirror.
