Square Enix, one of Japan's leading AAA game developers and publishers, has finally unveiled Symbiogenesis, a new NFT-based interactive experience built on the Ethereum blockchain. The announcement was made on November 3 during the India Game Developers Conference, clearing up weeks of speculation that the project might be related to the Parasite Eve franchise due to its name. Instead, Symbiogenesis is an entirely new intellectual property that leverages non-fungible tokens (NFTs) as core gameplay elements.
Story-Driven Gameplay Centered on NFT Collectibles
Symbiogenesis revolves around a series of character “symbioses” that players can collect as digital art NFTs. These NFT characters become part of the narrative, guiding players through missions themed around the “monopolization and distribution of resources.” The game is designed to blend storytelling with blockchain technology, allowing players to use their NFTs as profile pictures and trade them in a dedicated marketplace.
The experience is set to launch on the Ethereum network in Spring 2023, positioning it as one of the first high-profile blockchain games from a traditional Japanese developer. Square Enix emphasized that Symbiogenesis is not merely a speculative asset play but a narrative-driven journey where NFTs serve as both collectibles and functional in-game items.
Square Enix’s Growing Commitment to Web3
Symbiogenesis represents the first ground-up Web3 project from Square Enix, but the company has been signaling its blockchain ambitions for months. In May 2022, the company incorporated blockchain into its formal business strategy, stating that it would explore new IPs with NFTs as part of world-building elements.
Furthermore, Square Enix has formed a partnership with Oasys, a Japanese blockchain optimized for gaming, and is actively participating as a validator on the Oasys mainnet, which recently launched. This hands-on involvement in blockchain infrastructure underscores the company's long-term commitment to decentralized gaming.
In July, Square Enix also announced an NFT collection for its blockbuster franchise Final Fantasy VII to celebrate its 25th anniversary. Those NFTs will be issued on the Efinity network powered by Enjin, demonstrating the company's willingness to experiment with different blockchain platforms.
Implications for the Gaming and NFT Industries
As a traditional AAA giant, Square Enix’s entry into NFT gaming could help legitimize the sector, which has faced criticism for often prioritizing speculation over gameplay. By focusing on story, character art, and mission-driven resource mechanics, Symbiogenesis could set a new standard for “play-to-own” experiences that feel more like a game than a financial instrument.
However, challenges remain—including market volatility, regulatory hurdles, and skepticism from core gamers. Square Enix will need to balance innovation with player-friendly design to avoid the backlash that has plagued other NFT game launches.
