Crypto-linked equities posted their strongest one-day move of the summer on Wednesday, with Strategy up 11.95% to $103.58, Coinbase up 9.05% to $159.47, Circle up 9.44% to $78.50 and BitMine up 9.68% to $20.05. Each stock hit a fresh intraday high before giving back part of the gain into the close. The move came as Bitcoin pushed toward $70,000, triggering more than $1 billion in bearish crypto liquidations in an hour, while the U.S. Treasury said it will at least double its long-bond buyback program starting in September. Decrypt also said a White House meeting on market-structure rules and the Federal Reserve's July minutes could add more volatility later in the day. Strategy's latest weekly filing showed 840,447 BTC and $4.8 billion in cash, while BitMine chairman Tom Lee said the company holds 5.82 million ETH worth about $11.4 billion, equal to 4.8% of Ethereum's circulating supply. Even after Wednesday's surge, the three stocks remain down for the year, and analysts are split on whether the move marks a real reversal or another short-covering bounce.
Crypto-linked stocks ripped higher on Wednesday, with Strategy, Coinbase, Circle and BitMine all posting sharp gains in a session Decrypt called the strongest one-day rally of the summer for the group.
Strategy, which trades as MSTR, led the move. The Bitcoin treasury company closed up 11.95% at $103.58 after reaching an intraday high of $106.90, a gain of 13.07% from the open. Coinbase rose 9.05% to $159.47, after touching $165.74 intraday. Circle climbed 9.44% to $78.50 and BitMine added 9.68% to $20.05, with both names also setting fresh intraday highs before trimming gains late in the session.
The four stocks have different business models, but Decrypt said they share the same main market lever: Bitcoin. Strategy holds BTC directly on its balance sheet. Coinbase earns fees from crypto trading activity. Circle issues USDC and collects yield on the reserves backing it. BitMine accumulates and stakes Ethereum, which also tends to move with Bitcoin as the market's largest altcoin.
The equity rally tracked a Bitcoin short squeeze toward $70,000 that liquidated more than $1 billion in bearish crypto bets in a single hour. At the same time, the U.S. Treasury said it will at least double the size of its long-bond buyback program starting in September, a liquidity-friendly move that helped risk assets broadly. Decrypt said total crypto market value was up more than 5% during the session.
More catalysts were lined up later Wednesday. Decrypt reported that President Trump was expected to meet with SEC and CFTC leadership, along with crypto executives, at the White House to discuss market-structure rules. The Federal Reserve's July meeting minutes were also due later in the day. Either event could add more volatility before the close.
Strategy and Coinbase carried extra weight in the move because both have ranked among the most shorted large-cap stocks on Wall Street. Coinbase is currently the fifth most shorted stock in the financial sector, according to the report. That meant Wednesday's rally squeezed not only crypto derivatives traders, but also equity short sellers betting against the two names.
Strategy's latest weekly filing showed 840,447 BTC and $4.8 billion in cash. That makes the stock function almost like a leveraged bet on Bitcoin. BitMine's setup is similar on the Ethereum side. Chairman Tom Lee said this week that the company holds 5.82 million ETH, worth about $11.4 billion and equal to 4.8% of Ethereum's circulating supply.
Even after the jump, Strategy, Coinbase and BitMine remain deeply negative for the year. Analysts cited by Decrypt were split on whether the move is a genuine turn or just another short-covering bounce inside a longer downtrend. The next few sessions of trading volume, along with whether Bitcoin can hold the $70,284 resistance zone flagged on Wednesday's chart, are likely to decide which reading holds.
