Crisis Trigger: STRC Plunge and $1.2B Dividend Burden
Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy) has seen its preferred stock STRC plummet, pushing its annual dividend obligations to a staggering $1.2 billion. Simultaneously, the company faces cash reserve strain and multiple legal investigations. To address this multi-front crisis, Strategy announced the 'Digital Credit Capital Framework,' which authorizes up to $1.25 billion in Bitcoin sales, creates a $2.55 billion cash reserve, and raises the STRC dividend rate to 12%. The company also launched $1 billion each in preferred and common stock buyback programs to support share prices and reduce capital costs.
The End of 'Never Sell Bitcoin'
Strategy had long marketed itself with a 'never sell Bitcoin' mantra, with founder Michael Saylor repeatedly vowing to hold Bitcoin indefinitely. This authorization to sell marks a departure from its extreme HODL strategy toward more flexible capital management. Analysts view the framework as essentially leveraging the credit value of Bitcoin holdings for refinancing to ease short-term liquidity stress, though it also significantly increases the company's exposure to Bitcoin price volatility.
As of press time, Strategy has not disclosed a specific sale timeline or execution details. Market participants are watching the potential impact on BTC supply and demand, as well as whether the buyback plans can stabilize STRC prices.
