Strategy bought 4,603 bitcoin for $369.7 million between Aug. 24 and Aug. 30, marking its first weekly purchase since late June, according to a Form 8-K filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday. The average purchase price was $80,318 per coin.
The company said the purchase was funded entirely by common equity. Last week, Strategy sold 4,531,421 shares of MSTR stock and raised $602.8 million in net proceeds, then divided that money into four buckets.
How Strategy allocated the proceeds
- $369.7 million went to bitcoin purchases.
- $151.8 million was used to repurchase 1,557,177 shares of STRC preferred stock.
- $50.7 million funded STRC dividends.
- $30 million was added to the company’s USD Cash account.
As of Aug. 30, the USD Cash account stood at $1.61 billion. A separate USD Reserve held $5.10 billion.
Total bitcoin holdings rise to 845,050 BTC
Following the purchase, Strategy’s total holdings reached 845,050 BTC, acquired for $63.73 billion at an average cost of $75,412 per coin. At bitcoin prices around $78,000, the position was roughly $2 billion above cost.
That stack is equal to more than 4% of bitcoin’s 21 million supply cap, according to Unchained.
Saylor signaled the move before the filing
Michael Saylor hinted at the purchase ahead of the filing. On Sunday, he posted the company’s holdings tracker with the caption 「We’re back」. On Monday, he followed up with 「paint the bears orange」.
The purchase follows a difficult summer
The buying pause that has now ended came after what the report described as a difficult summer. Strategy sold $216 million of bitcoin, its largest disclosed sale to date, after pausing STRC share sales when the preferred stock traded well below its $100 par value. That also shut down the mechanism that had funded months of bitcoin buying.
On June 29, the company introduced a Digital Credit Capital Framework that authorized $1 billion of preferred repurchases and $1 billion of common stock buybacks. Of those amounts, $364.8 million and $1 billion, respectively, remain available.
MSTR shares closed higher Monday
MSTR closed at $132.94 on Monday, up 4.42% on the day.
