Suno said it will add watermarks to all audio produced by its models in the coming weeks, giving partner platforms the option to label the files as AI-generated content or block them outright. The move comes as the company faces mounting legal pressure: a German court ruled on July 31 that Suno violated local music licensing rules, and Sony’s copyright case against the company in the United States also reached a court hearing in July at the summary judgment stage.
Suno sets out a watermarking plan
In operating principles published on its official blog, Suno said every audio file generated by its models will be watermarked within the next few weeks. The company said the system is meant to give partner platforms a workable tool to identify AI output, either to flag it or keep it off their services.
Suno did not name the technology it plans to use. It described the method in broad terms: an inaudible hidden code embedded in the waveform, paired with a detector that can identify the source. The company called the technology “durable and resistant to tampering” and said it would not affect audio quality. Its stated purpose is to help partner platforms curb fraud and abuse.
Three gaps in the announcement
The announcement left several key questions unanswered. Shulman did not say whether Suno will build the system itself or use an existing product such as Google SynthID. He also did not give a firm rollout date beyond saying it would happen in the coming weeks. The company likewise did not disclose whether download limits will be tightened, or what the exact figures, tiering structure, and overage charges might look like.
Before this watermark plan, Suno already had anti-abuse measures in place. It bars users from naming specific singers or songs in prompts, works with Musixmatch to stop users from uploading copyrighted material as generation inputs, and has updated its usage policies to strengthen those restrictions.
The timing overlaps with active lawsuits
Suno released the watermark announcement on Aug. 6. The backdrop is a surge of AI-generated music flowing onto streaming platforms such as Spotify, with Suno described as one of the main sources. That has made the company a particular target for the music industry.
In the U.S., both Universal Music and Sony have sued Suno for copyright infringement. Sony’s case entered a court hearing at the summary judgment stage in July 2026. At issue is whether training AI models on copyrighted songs can qualify as fair use, the first time that question has been brought before a court in this way. According to the report, both cases could expose Suno to substantial financial penalties.
Germany delivered another setback at roughly the same time. A German court ruled on July 31 that Suno had violated local music licensing regulations.
Training data remains the core dispute
The report also points to a hack at the end of 2025 that led to a data leak. The leaked material indicated that Suno scraped content from YouTube, Deezer, and Genius to train its models. Suno never proactively disclosed the incident. The leak may have involved personal data tied to tens of millions of users, and it has already led to a class action lawsuit in Massachusetts.
That is why watermarking does not solve the company’s legal problem. The courts are examining where the training data came from, not whether the output files carry labels. Watermarking addresses content identification and platform moderation at the distribution stage. The lawsuits turn on the legality of the material used to train the models.
Watermarks are not a full fix
The report says the technology itself has limits. If Suno’s watermark is broken, previously generated tracks could have their AI label stripped away. Open-source models create another challenge because users can generate AI music on their own hardware without any watermark at all. That is a broader weakness shared by content watermarking systems.
Suno tries to recast its public position
In the blog post, Shulman framed Suno as a creative tool for musicians and personal projects. He said AI “cannot replace the human experience, emotion, and imperfection that make music meaningful,” and argued that AI should support originality rather than imitation.
Even so, the report argues that watermarking will not rescue Suno in court. What it may change is how streaming platforms and rights holders deal with the company. A technical filtering tool gives those parties a more practical way to decide whether to keep working with Suno, which helps explain why the company chose to make the watermark pledge now.
