Lightning Labs has officially launched Taproot Assets v0.6, a critical update to the first multi-asset Lightning protocol on Bitcoin mainnet. The new version introduces the --new_grouped_asset option, allowing developers to use a shared group_key to simplify the minting, sending, and receiving of stablecoins with multiple tranches. The Request for Quote (RFQ) protocol has been upgraded to support group_key identifiers and up to 20 inbound Taproot Assets channels, greatly increasing routing flexibility. Concurrently, Tether announced it will bring USDT to Bitcoin, supporting both on-chain transactions and the Lightning Network, marking a major milestone for stablecoin integration with Bitcoin.

Taproot Assets v0.6 Released: Major Upgrade for Multi-Asset Lightning Protocol

On July 2, Lightning Labs officially released Taproot Assets v0.6, a key update to the first multi-asset Lightning protocol on Bitcoin mainnet. The upgrade focuses on improving how stablecoins are minted, sent, and received over the Bitcoin Lightning Network. The company expressed gratitude to the Bitcoin and Lightning developer community for their feedback, testing, and early product building, which have been instrumental in driving Taproot Assets adoption.

New Grouped_Asset Feature: Streamlining Multi-Tranche Stablecoin Management

Previously, developers handling stablecoins with multiple tranches had to rely on individual asset_id for channel funding, sending, and receiving payments, making the workflow cumbersome. The new version introduces the --new_grouped_asset option, allowing issuers to link multiple tranches of the same asset using a shared group_key identifier. Although each batch retains its own asset_id, using group_key enables developers to reference a single identifier for all Lightning operations, including funding a channel, paying an invoice, and receiving payments. This is especially beneficial for stablecoins like USDT that may be issued in multiple tranches, ensuring fungibility across batches.

RFQ Protocol Upgrade: Group_Key Support and Up to 20 Inbound Channels

The Request for Quote (RFQ) protocol has also been updated to support group_key identifiers and allow receivers to negotiate time-limited price quotes with edge nodes using the standard BOLT 11 invoice format. Edge nodes provide a critical service by converting between assets and Bitcoin at the edges of the network, enabling Taproot Assets on Lightning to function as a decentralized foreign exchange network. Additionally, while previous versions only supported a single edge node path for payments, v0.6 allows receivers to use up to 20 inbound Taproot Assets channels, significantly expanding routing options and enabling larger transaction volumes.

Tether USDT Coming to Bitcoin On-Chain and Lightning Network

Coinciding with this release, Lightning Labs CEO Elizabeth Stark and Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino jointly announced that Tether will bring USDT to Bitcoin, supporting both on-chain transactions and the Lightning Network. This move signals the largest stablecoin issuer's endorsement of Bitcoin's network capabilities and is expected to bring increased liquidity and use cases to the Bitcoin ecosystem.
