U.S. President Donald Trump said a deal with Iran could still be reached, but he also said he has become increasingly distrustful of the country.
Speaking at a Cabinet meeting, Trump was asked whether a ceasefire should be restored after alternating attacks involving Iran. He replied, “We just want to win.” He said the United States was doing “very well” and was trying to be as friendly as possible under the circumstances.
Trump said Iran had been hit hard. He said the country had no navy, no air force and no air defenses, while adding that it was not completely without capability. “They do have some capability, but not much,” he said.
Trump repeats that Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon
Trump said the issue was simple: “Iran will not have a nuclear weapon, and they cannot have a nuclear weapon.” He added that if Iran really had one, the Middle East would already have been destroyed.
Asked what he expected over the next four weeks, Trump told reporters that Washington would hit Iran “very hard.” He added, “At some point, they will say, we can’t take it anymore.”
Deal still possible, but distrust is rising
Trump also said a deal on Iran remained possible. He said Witkoff, Kushner, Vance and Rubio were all involved in the effort.
At the same time, Trump said he trusted the Iranians less and less because, in his words, “they are lying.” He said that during negotiations, Iran fired five missiles at Jordan. Trump added that Iran’s way of negotiating angered him, saying something that should have taken 10 minutes was instead dragged out for seven hours.
